ABOUT CALIFORNIA COLLEGE BOUND

ouR mISSION

For over decades, access to higher education has been tilted towards more affluent high school students or those who attend high schools that have the resources to truly support students on their journey to college. In 2002 we realized the necessity to develop and establish our own after school college pathway program.

Mike Lansing, who was our last Executive Director was also a member of the Los Angeles Unified School Board at the  time, brought school district educators together to develop a true daily pathway support program, so that we could overcome the lack of a pathway to higher education that our members were facing while attending LAUSD. While high school graduation was our 1st priority, our new program aimed higher and is called California College Bound.

OUR VISION

To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. We achieve this through a commitment to quality programs and services in an environment that is safe, nurturing and inspiring.  At California College Bound, we envision a world where all students have access to high-quality education and equal opportunities for success.

OUR LEADERSHIP

Enabling youth to become responsible, and productive adults is where our leadership begins.  Our experienced and dedicated staff members are passionate about teaching and are committed to providing our students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed.

Our Program

At California College Bound, we strive to provide a safe and inclusive environment where students can develop their intellectual, social, and emotional skills, preparing them for success in their future endeavors.

Our purpose has always been to introduce and expose young people to the idea of college and prepare them for a successful experience.

Through California College Bound's one-on-one case management strategy, youth receive the guidance, support and resources they need to meet the academic, financial and testing requirements for public and private universities. Our Mission is to give students more confidence in themselves and in life choices so they have a PLAN for life after high school.

OUR CASE MANAGEMENT TEAM

Our Case Management program plays a pivotal role in supporting underserved youth and families.  Case Managers track academic progress and note the classes needed to meet the curriculum requirements of the University of California, California State, and community college systems. They guide youth through application and testing procedures, assist with financial aid applications, teach youth to manage deadlines, advocate on their behalf, counsel parents, and provide cultural mentoring.

Our Case Managers guide each participant through the often difficult landscape of college preparation, application process, eventual acceptance and transition.  Our Case Management program plays a pivotal role in supporting underserved youth and families.

OUR PARTNERSHIPS

Our Work With the Boys and Girls Club

The Boys & Girls Club has always offered  a wide variety of programs that build character, enhance education, cultivate creativity, encourage fitness and teamwork and teach important life skills. These programs give young people the opportunity to choose from a variety of activities. The Boys & Girls Club recognize that it takes innovative, quality programs designed to empower youth to excel in school and lead healthy, productive lives.

Boys & Girls Clubs Contracted Schools

The BGCLAH College Bound Program is in operation at the following 6 LAUSD schools:

  • Narbonne HS
  • Gardena HS
  • San Pedro HS
  • POLA HS
  • Phineas Banning HS
  • HArts Academy

We have designed a case management program to individually assist hundreds of students in graduating from our high school on time and to be able to smoothly transition to their post-high school college and career.

What Sets Us Apart From The Rest

California College Bound has served over 1,566 youth and had a 99% Graduation Rate, 97% of the graduating seniors started college this fall. Over $16.55 millions in federal aid and scholarships have been secured.

OUR SIGNATURE CASE MANAGEMENT

Our academic case management centered COLLEGE BOUND program started as an after-school FREE resource for our community’s most at-risk youth at San Pedro, Wilmington and Port of Los Angeles Club sites.

Utilizing this same case management system during the school day by placing “School Liaisons” in our 6 High School College Centers not only allows more students to receive 1-on-1 counseling and more often – it allows us to also refer them to our daily 3 – 8 PM after school College Bound program in the College Bound Centers at “5” local Boys & Girls Clubs (San Pedro, Wilmington, Port, Harbor City and Harbor Gateway ).

College Bound focuses on 1-on-1 case management which tracks each student's academic progress to assure fulfilling both high school requirements and A-G college preparation coursework. We also provide assistance on college exploration and admissions, and work with youth to complete all financial aid applications available (prioritizing FAFSA completion) to make college as affordable as possible for them and their family.
