Founded in 1881 as the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary, they became Spelman College in 1924. Now a global leader in the education of women of African descent, Spelman is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), and are proud members of the Atlanta University Center Consortium. Today, the student body comprises more than 2,100 students from 43 states and 10 foreign countries. A private historically Black liberal arts college for men was founded in 1867. Their most famous alumni..Martin Luther King, Jr. Morehouse realizes their mission by emphasizing the intellectual and character development of its students. Clark Atlanta is a private, Methodist university located in Atlanta, Georgia. As a historically black college, CAU has a strong history of and commitment to the education of black Americans. It is a small institution with an enrollment of 3,257 undergraduate students. Admissions is fairly competitive as the Clark Atlanta acceptance rate is 56%. Popular majors include Radio and Television, Business, and Psychology. Clark College was the nation’s first four-year liberal arts college to serve a primarily African-American student population. Tuskegee University is an independent and state-related institution of higher education. Its programs serve a student body that is coeducational as well as racially, ethnically and religiously diverse. With a strong orientation toward disciplines which highlight the relationship between education and work force preparation in the sciences, professions and technical areas, Tuskegee University also emphasizes the importance of the liberal arts as a foundation for successful careers in all areas. Established in 1867, Howard University is a federally chartered, private, doctoral research extensive university located in Washington, DC. With an enrollment of approximately 11,000 students in its undergraduate, graduate, professional, and joint degree programs, which span more than 120 areas of study within 13 schools and colleges, the University is dedicated to educating students from diverse backgrounds. Since its founding in 1867, Howard has awarded more than 120,000 degrees and certificates in the arts, the sciences, and the humanities. Howard is a leader in STEM fields. Established in 1915, today Xavier retains its distinction as the only historically Black, Catholic University in the United States. Undergraduate students, regardless of their major are required to complete sixty-six hours of liberal arts core curriculum courses in English, Literature, Fine Arts, Foreign Languages, History, African American Studies, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Philosophy, Theology, and Social Sciences in addition to courses in their major fields. Xavier offers preparation in 46 major areas on the undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree levels. Xavier continues to rank first nationally in the number of African American students earning undergraduate degrees in both the biological/life sciences and the physical sciences. DSU is proud of our heritage as one of the country’s first land-grant educational institutions. Today, we’re a welcome center of learning for students from many backgrounds. Since its founding in 1892, Winston-Salem State University has grown from a one-room frame structure to more than 39 buildings located on a picturesque 117-acre campus overlooking the woodlands of Salem Lake in the heart of Winston-Salem. Virginia State University, an HBCU founded in 1882, is one of Virginia's two land-grant institutions and is located 20 minutes south of Richmond in the village of Ettrick. Virginia State University made history when it was selected to host a 2024 Presidential Debate. VSU is the first Historically Black College or University (HBCU) ever selected to host a General Election U.S. Presidential Debate. Founded October 3, 1887, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), also known as Florida A&M, is a public, HBCU located in Tallahassee, Florida. FAMU enrolls nearly 10,000 students from across the United States and more than 70 countries.
